START WITH WHY: Why engage in education advocacy as citizens?
The idea of starting with “Why” has been popularized by Simon Sinek. He advocates that to communicate more effectively to others, and even to ourselves, it is not enough to be clear about what we do, or even how we do it. Above all, what we need to be clear about is why we do what we do – our purpose, our cause, or belief.
He calls it the Golden Circle.
While he has directed his advice mainly to corporations, the core idea of starting with “Why” is applicable also to NGOs and individual citizens who want to engage in education advocacy.
This course on education advocacy will discuss a lot of WHATs and HOWs. There are many education issues and challenges, various proposals to insure access and quality, ideas on financing and governance of the whole education system. There are various lessons about citizen participation, networking and building partnerships, and other advocacy strategies.
We will be discussing these in Module Two and Module Three.
But in Module One we start with the WHY of education advocacy.
